American Indian Arapaho-style Bone breastplate historical recreation
While early breastplates would be as a general rule quite plain, with mainly bone hairpipe and brass beads, those made at the turn of the 19th century and into the reservation period could be quite fancy and elaborate, like this piece, which would have belonged to a warrior of great visionary medicine. The centerpiece is a leather-encased mirror. Its edge is beaded with old stock vintage Bodmer Blue, Cheyenne Pink, light turquoise, chalk white, and dark greasy yellow seed beads. The leather is dyed with ochre powder.
From the mirror hangs a delicate dangle with a crow feather, fastened with traditional red Stroud trade wool, ornamented with light turquoise and Cheyenne Pink seed beads, brass bead, an 18th century Venetian Cross Trails bead and 18th century cobalt and ruby red Venetian beads. On the sides, 2 dangles composed of crow feathers, painted with ochre pigment and fastened by red Stroud trade wool with Bodmer Blue seed beads. On the sides below, 2 dangles adorned with 18th century Chinese coins. 42 rows of antiqued Canadian wapiti (elk) bone hairpipe.
Hand-cut and ochre-dyed Canadian deerskin fringes (there are 20 metres of fringe on this piece), held by solid vintage French brass beads. The central strip is composed of powder blue, Bodmer Blue, and Cheyenne Pink vintage old stock crow beads. Bodmer Blue crow glass beads and brass beads adorn the neck loops. The protective medicine pouch at the bottom center, made of deerskin, contains 2 medicinal plants, in the traditional way, its edge is beaded with vintage old stock Bodmer Blue seed beads using a traditional Ojibwe technique, and the pouch is closed with 4 rows of powder blue seed beads.
The crow feathers were collected in the wild. This is a recreation, and not a replica, in the sense that it is not a reproduction of a documented existing piece. Rather than a technical copy, this is an original creation made in the genuine spirit and style of a piece that could have been crafted in the early reservation period, in a style reminiscent of the Arapaho.
